Fishing With Phonics is Great for Acceleration…

Fishing With Phonics accelerates instruction. In other traditional phonics programs, the students are usually presented phonemically related words in each lesson at only one level, usually the first or second grade levels. Many of the students may be ready for more complex multi-syllable words while others are learning the one syllable words and blends.  Because of the multiple levels contained within each Fishing With Phonics lesson, one can accelerate the learning of those who are ready to read beyond the designated lower levels.  Levels Three and Four of each lesson give children the chance to exercise their phonetic skills with multi-syllable words taken from the third, fourth and fifth grade levels which both challenges and motivates them. Fishing With Phonics is Great for Remediation...

Remediation is acceleration’s twin brother.  Remediation simply means to assess a student’s current level and then start teaching him/her at that level in a systematic step by step accelerated manner so he/she can reach appropriate grade level skills and beyond. This program was originally developed specifically to remediate dyslexic and reading disabled students who had failed to progress in traditional reading classrooms with traditional methodologies. About 8 to 12 students would enter the author’s fourth grade class each year reading at the primer to third grade academic levels.  Most were at a beginning to mid-second grade level, approximately two academic grade levels below their peers.  Within one and one half years most of these students would be either on grade level or within one grade level of their peers after using Fishing With Phonics.
